Some players are playing for their jobs, while others are simply going through the motions as the season winds down. The Calgary Flames are now just playing out the season. Some players are playing for their jobs, and others are just playing out the stretch. <p></p><p>In reality, Kadri and Huberdeau have checked out. Connor, Zary, and Martin Pospisil continue to play their hearts out. It's as if they are two kids who are thrilled to be in a candy store. We could use more players like Martin and Connor in our lineup.</p><p>The team is making too many mistakes as a whole, but let's face facts: the defense has been decimated. Without Tanev and Hanifin, the Flames are finding it difficult to recover. It will take time to plug those holes. In the meantime, the Flames acquired from the Sharks Nikita Okhotyuk, a solid stay-at-home defenseman who can step in as the number 5 defenseman for now. </p><p>In the trade for Hanifin, the Flames also acquired Daniil Mirmanov. He has some offensive skills and could develop into a second-line pairing. He has a powerful shot from the blue line. We might be able to use his talent on the powerplay. Mirmanov just signed a two-year extension with the team. </p><p>What do we have in the prospects in the trades? In the Lindholm trade, the Flames acquired high-end prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo. In Hunter, the Flames have a solid dman with some offensive skills. He is an excellent puck-moving dman. He has great speed, getting himself out of danger. Joni is a no-nonsense dman with a chip on his shoulder. </p><p>In the Tanev trade, the Flames received prospect Artem Grushnikov. Artem is a reliable defenseman who often breaks up rushes, is very good in the defensive zone, and is a solid skater. He has the potential to become a solid second-pairing defenseman. We all knew Lindholm wasn't staying, so Conroy had to get what he could. This season, not so much. Andréi is a player trying to find his niche. Kuzmenko is a third-line player who will help with the powerplay. He is better than he has been this year, but he's not the 39-goal scorer he used to be. The Calgary Flames announced that Oliver Kylington from the Calgary Wranglers is heading out on a conditioning assignment. <p></p><p>Firstly, I want to offer my sincere congratulations to Oliver. The road he had to travel and barriers he had to overcome are beyond belief. It is a miracle. As Flames fans—no, I should say, as fellow hockey lovers—we should applaud him and give him all the support we can.</p><p>Secondly, what does this mean for the Calgary Flames roster?</p><p>So, let’s talk hockey for a second. If Kylington’s conditioning assignment doesn’t last too long, it could make things easier for us to trade Hanifin. If Oliver can step up quickly, we could consider a futures trade for Hanifin, and Kylington could fill his spot.</p><p>It will take time for Oliver to get in game shape, but having Kylington on the team gives the Flames another option. Can Oliver regain his skills enough to make the Flames a playoff contender? I am not saying this move makes them a contender, but it’s definitely a possibility!</p><p>Then, you open up a whole bunch of opportunities. Let’s say the Flames are within two to four points away from making the playoffs. In that scenario, what would be your thoughts on Hanifin, Tanev, and, of course, Lindholm?</p><p>If the Flames are in a good position, this is what I was told: “I believe the Flames will fight for that playoff spot.” While they may make some player trades, they would be hockey trades, not future trades. </p><p>In plain English, the Flames will bring in players who can contribute effectively to stay competitive in the playoff races. Only time will tell whether they will succeed.</p><p><br /></p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-7872157387882358502023-11-09T15:51:00.006-07:002023-11-09T15:51:50.294-07:00Flames Ignited: A Winning Formula?<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2SrDN3NdNUVMqFri4Pmtityh-_EF_ctRQzfKaHRXjXjwPSQ3geu5mpiTqM6NYOKiapWxmzJdflrjeEKhczOQmWPezBkvTPZBC7JK8U_MN8spq-0K_bYcLeICl3dglQGBihz5p66ocL9Im8MqoX3aJpjSsam76Lc145t9x_gvuziM4IcW64W1nccDsh_w/s1200/flaming%20hockey%20arena.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2SrDN3NdNUVMqFri4Pmtityh-_EF_ctRQzfKaHRXjXjwPSQ3geu5mpiTqM6NYOKiapWxmzJdflrjeEKhczOQmWPezBkvTPZBC7JK8U_MN8spq-0K_bYcLeICl3dglQGBihz5p66ocL9Im8MqoX3aJpjSsam76Lc145t9x_gvuziM4IcW64W1nccDsh_w/w400-h210/flaming%20hockey%20arena.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div><br />The Calgary Flames have been making headlines this week. First, let's talk about the positive: the Flames are on a two-game winning streak. I will take a step further: they were so dominant in their game against the Stars that they would have emerged victorious if it weren't for the superhuman goalie Jake Oettinger. Sometimes, you have to tip your hat to the goalie. <p></p><p>What is going right? </p><p>The first step is getting Nazem Kadri to buy in. Kadri's performance has significantly improved. His active involvement is vital for the Flames' success. With the addition of fresh talent to the lineup, Kadri appears to have found a renewed sense of purpose. This leads us to the second thing that has gone right.</p><p>The new call-ups have lit a fire under this team. (Pun intended—see what I did there?) Connor Zary has been a spark plug since he was called up. He looks like a seasoned vet with the remarkable skills he has displayed so far. Zary has three points in his first three games and could have had plenty more.</p><p>Martin Pospispil has the speed to burn. Martin has made his mark, making his presence known. He is a hard-working forward who uses his size to his advantage. Martin also scored in his first game of the season. His tenacity and skill have given him plenty of scoring opportunities.</p><p>The third and final reason for their success is the fact the team has bought into the system. The players are working harder, remembering the game is won on the boards. They are actively competing for the puck and, for a change, winning the puck battles. That means they have puck possession more often. When you have the puck more, you can score more. </p><p>If the players continue to work hard and buy into the system, they may force management to rethink selling or buying players at the deadline. If the Flames are close in the playoff race, there may be a future for Hanifin, Tanav, and Lindholm.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>I know that management made the right decision for Huberdeau. Watching him on the bench does not bring me pleasure. It is a challenge to understand what is happening. I know everyone is jumping on Huberdeau, but let's think about this for a second, shall we? Both the coach and the player may be at fault for not finding a suitable system. Huberdau is built for run-and-gun, but the Flames are more of a defensive team than run-and-gun. It sometimes takes time for a player to adjust to a new system. That's all I am saying. Something to think about.</p><div>Randy</div>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-31431415615476447272023-10-31T22:38:00.001-06:002023-10-31T22:38:15.191-06:00The Calgary Flames' Comedy of Errors: Golf, Waffles, and Undercover Boss<p><span style="color: #0e101a;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBD5limbgrVbPyl6-qm2wa4BE6TjWebCjB8-owvAkECOvsVa6R_XuigD6Eyn2GMmJJTRU32EGC4d-apUFs_PIZGThw0_gtPV4wRyTZIHMVJR1WV7WGeda_VxdHzSoMzCdBhG1sIB0yPEb333ux8yLw7PUTlLHsPkJEEroCzMUaC_cdEeeTNLtxeC_BzR0/s1200/bystanders%20long.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBD5limbgrVbPyl6-qm2wa4BE6TjWebCjB8-owvAkECOvsVa6R_XuigD6Eyn2GMmJJTRU32EGC4d-apUFs_PIZGThw0_gtPV4wRyTZIHMVJR1WV7WGeda_VxdHzSoMzCdBhG1sIB0yPEb333ux8yLw7PUTlLHsPkJEEroCzMUaC_cdEeeTNLtxeC_BzR0/w400-h210/bystanders%20long.png" width="400" /></a></div><br />I have overheard some interesting conversations on the street lately. In two out of three games, the Flames have secured leads only to allow them to slip away. The main problem seems to be mental, as the team fails to maintain their performance for sixty minutes of gameplay.</p><p>I am seeing some improvements. Huberdeau looks like he is invested this season, playing more with increased energy. Backlund is acting like a Captain, being a leader out on the ice. Then there is this kid, Matthew Cornado, who consistently works hard to make a difference. But the bottom line is that this team should be 3-0 instead of 1-1-1. The Flames had leads in both Washington and Pittsburgh but only managed to secure one point. The team needs to be better. There were too many breakdowns defensively, and they were a mess in Pittsburgh. </p><p>I know people blame the one goal in the Capitals game on Marky. But the team does not have to stop playing after a bad break! When the Flames have a lead against a beatable team like the Caps, they have to keep on them and throttle them. Instead, the Flames slow down and let Washington catch and beat them. The Flames lack the killer instinct required in such situations. Coleman and Kadri, who have cups, need to nip this in the bud. Don't let it become a recurring problem. Our star players must step up when needed and remain visible even when the going gets tough. </p><p>While it may be early in the season, but if we have the same mental errors later in the season, it will come back to bite us. To those who argue that it's too early to worry, consider this: do wins later in the season earn us more points? Just something to ponder.</p><p>Best player so far this season</p><p>Matthew Cornado has been a spark plug for the team, infusing the dressing room with his contagious enthusiasm. He is a breath of fresh air. </p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-47788031179936370492023-09-15T16:01:00.003-06:002023-09-15T16:01:42.678-06:00Flames on Fire: The Five Statements That Will Ignite Calgary's Success<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj17VlWIUGYUDSc-3dIBK2ankC129gjFyNFL3YeY0bfRTZS5C8AneHYG5BrK-3XqnHNIUx9gRF4f-CpxNR9KvtsS65_PV4PBqfDZ460qg4119JKVF33C1SW5Vervtha32sdkdxKh-QcH1yENc6oHPj-pkcMBt6XMPamTfpd8ML5tIFGAcCtpg5lCeJZ_Pk/s1280/hockey%20fireball-422746_1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="905" data-original-width="1280" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj17VlWIUGYUDSc-3dIBK2ankC129gjFyNFL3YeY0bfRTZS5C8AneHYG5BrK-3XqnHNIUx9gRF4f-CpxNR9KvtsS65_PV4PBqfDZ460qg4119JKVF33C1SW5Vervtha32sdkdxKh-QcH1yENc6oHPj-pkcMBt6XMPamTfpd8ML5tIFGAcCtpg5lCeJZ_Pk/w400-h283/hockey%20fireball-422746_1280.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="color: #0e101a;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="color: #0e101a;">Describing last season as a disaster would be an understatement. The Calgary Flames fell significantly short of their team goals and expectations. They found ways to lose and continue to lose. Here are five statements that must come true for the Calgary Flames to be a success this year.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Noah Hanifin Situation</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Craig Conroy has to find a way to trade Noah as quickly as possible. Not only does he have to trade Noah, but he has to ensure the Calgary Flames remain competitive after making the trade. Flames ownership has made it quite clear that come hell or high water, the Flames will be a playoff team, or Craig Conroy will be finding a job for McDonald's. I am being facetious, but you get the point. Management's and ownership's top priority must be for the Calgary Flames to be a competitive, successful team this season.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Jonathan Huberdeau </strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Get cracking, Jonathan. With your new coach and system in place, it's time to dial it up. Huberdeau will be highly motivated to have a good season. He is determined to get things straight. He knows he owes Flames fans more than he gave them last year. I am confident that he will be a dominant force, and this is crucial for the Calgary Flames' playoff hopes. He needs to get back to his 100-point season this year.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Nazem Kadri</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Nazem has to be a leader in the dressing room. He has to be smarter on the ice and off the ice. He has to clean up the dressing room so there's no conflict among the players. He has to be the solution to the problem and not add to the problem. Kadri has to get his 25-30 goals and accumulate 65 to 70 points. He needs to be a pest. He has to be in the opposition's heads, not his teammates. If he does these things, he will be a fan favorite. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Jacob Markstrom</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Everyone but the kitchen sink blamed last season's problems on Jacob. Whether that is accurate or not, he does have to improve. However, the lackluster support he received from the defense is disappointing. Well, Jacob has to be Jacob; he is one of the best goalies in the league and capable of returning to that. By avoiding costly goals and maintaining a solid position, he has the potential to become one of the league's top goalkeepers, leading the Calgary Flames to victory. The Flames fans will be dancing in the streets.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Players must be committed</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">The Calgary Flames are currently facing uncertainty as players such as Lindholm, Hannifin, and Backlund are hesitant to commit to contract extensions. Understandably, players want to assess their options before committing long-term, but they can't abdicate their responsibility for ensuring a competitive season. It's a catch-22: darned if they do and darned if they don't. </span></p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-46069491910338638812023-06-24T21:26:00.004-06:002023-06-28T16:53:48.901-06:00Flames Draft Day<p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-LBUaU_Y5SE3N1rKyep6hR5OTZThgOUnZMqjYNaYhZcyovkNb1_Px5ExYPmkuDxXESc1uYRU3yXCr273s9UX1UFzDrr1K2UhbOFDowN1Lb-pM2ioiXPQ-XPOL4sasVv_bFFujbwd2iXG89uJnqiT5ein6qPBBiQpNi4VuKEtWN0mOIEhNbaE0QmqIRx0/s1200/flames%202023%20draft.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-LBUaU_Y5SE3N1rKyep6hR5OTZThgOUnZMqjYNaYhZcyovkNb1_Px5ExYPmkuDxXESc1uYRU3yXCr273s9UX1UFzDrr1K2UhbOFDowN1Lb-pM2ioiXPQ-XPOL4sasVv_bFFujbwd2iXG89uJnqiT5ein6qPBBiQpNi4VuKEtWN0mOIEhNbaE0QmqIRx0/w400-h210/flames%202023%20draft.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></span><p></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Even though I never pick the draft right, I always enjoy this draft blog. The Calgary Flames are poised to make an exciting selection this year. They will try their best to get another draft selection. There are rumors of Hanifin going, with 6-8 teams interested in acquiring him. Working the premise that there is only one draft pick in the first round, here is my choice. With only one first-round pick available, the Flames appear to have their sights set on dman David Reinbacher. But chances are he will be gone by the 16th pick, forcing the Flames to consider other options.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">My picks: </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">First Round</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">16 Matthew Wood - Left Wing</strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Matthew is an intelligent player with soft hands with a great explosive shot. Yes, I used the word "iconic" because he is the icon of coaches in Calgary. He poured his heart and soul into this team, everything he had. We must still give him the respect he deserves for being a pillar of the NHL. If you were to have a picture of what the Calgary Flames embody in spirit, it would be a picture of Darryl Sutter. It is time to see him go, but today I am as happy as I am sad to see this occasion happen.</p><p>The Flames had to take action after a disappointing season. It was clear that changes were necessary and sacrifices had to be made. Somebody had to pay the piper. Darryl's reliance on veterans over younger players had to be fixed. The Flames were an old, slow team, and I understand that.</p><p>What does this mean for the Calgary Flames' future? It means the organization is taking a step in the right direction. They are getting younger. It also means they are letting the players direct what this organization does. It happens in every team sooner or later—the players do not get along with the coach and the players will not play with the coach, and then the freeze-out happens. They stop listening to the coach and stop working for him. When that happens, nobody wins. This is precisely what was happening in Calgary. When the players stop playing for the coach, you either have to fire the coach or make a whole bunch of trades. It's a lot easier to fire the coach.</p><p>Now that the Calgary Flames have moved on, it's time to consider who their next coach will be. That's right; it's time to play GM. Who would you hire as the new coach of the Calgary Flames? Usually, when I play this game, I end up having foot-in-mouth disease. That's okay, as long as I don't have foot fungus. But I digress. On to my picks or best options as coach of the Calgary Flames.</p><p><b>Mitch Love</b></p><p>Mitch Love, coach of the Calgary Wranglers, should be at the top of your list when considering potential coaches. Mitch was Coach of the Year for the last two seasons in the AHL. He is highly successful and highly respected among his players. He is a good "player's coach." He is fair, and players know what is expected of them.</p><p><b>Bruce Boudreau</b></p><p>Bruce is one of the most successful coaches out there. He knows the game and surrounds himself with successful people. Boudreau is one of the best motivators out there. He gets the players to do what he wants but makes it look like it's what they want. With Bruce there, he is in charge. The players will not be allowed to run the roost.</p><p><b>Peter Laviolette</b></p><p>He is the sexy name out there. Peter might be the big name the Flames need. He is an offensive coach, and his style of play aligns with Huberdough's skill set. The Flames need an offensive coach to bring the best out of these players and get them to perform. Laviolette might be what the doctor ordered for the Calgary Flames.</p><p>As for General Manager, the Calgary Flames' leading candidate is Conroy. His biggest advocate is Mr. Iggy. (I, for one, would love to have Jarome in one of our management positions, if that is in the cards.)</p><p><br /></p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-6705466179824846822023-04-11T20:25:00.004-06:002023-04-11T20:25:39.110-06:00Flames Extinguished<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXnCt-mKxetTsSi-i0aVgpUMLkJ5SrX4LUq4Ils-aoLPd5QW7Cfh7dQJA9zO0Nuro7QV8wuDw7uGMtqzZSIlrWU2Ky7Ankom6au6lsJu7ky09r2_czCAkD84WywiB7mS5O8fJjT3vvVWBCl0lZE3f08NdZO0wT9vFOatqIHAbWQK2bR7xCBzoPNePz/s512/fire%20extinguished%20cJBaNlay9PqqIuW0COFL--3--gz9iy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXnCt-mKxetTsSi-i0aVgpUMLkJ5SrX4LUq4Ils-aoLPd5QW7Cfh7dQJA9zO0Nuro7QV8wuDw7uGMtqzZSIlrWU2Ky7Ankom6au6lsJu7ky09r2_czCAkD84WywiB7mS5O8fJjT3vvVWBCl0lZE3f08NdZO0wT9vFOatqIHAbWQK2bR7xCBzoPNePz/w400-h400/fire%20extinguished%20cJBaNlay9PqqIuW0COFL--3--gz9iy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>The Calgary Flames season has been a disappointment, and this is something that none of us can deny. A major issue for the Flames has been their inability to close out games. While the goalies often get blamed for this, the fact is that there has been much more to it than just lousy goaltending. The powerplay has not been able to produce goals, and this is an issue that does not stem from the goaltenders. The Flames made seven or eight deep bad defensive plays in our zone. It has nothing to do with our goaltending. </p><p>One of the primary concerns for the Calgary Flames is finding a suitable center to play alongside Jonathan Huberdeau. We all know Huberdeau is a far better player than what he has shown. The team needs to establish a system that works well for every player. It is essential to eliminate selfishness and focus on playing as a cohesive unit. Unfortunately, this season, we have had many examples of players trying to win games single-handedly.</p><p>Additionally, the team needs more energy and emotion than they have displayed in previous seasons. Darrell Sutter's ability to motivate his players has been a significant benefit in past seasons. But this year, it has just not been there.</p><p>There has been much talk about Markstrom's confidence taking a hit after the Edmonton Oilers series last season. Throughout this season, Jacob has struggled with his performance, frequently getting caught out of position and conceding easy goals. That being said, he has yet to get the greatest support. Often, Jacob has been left to fend for himself, with his teammates failing to provide the necessary assistance.</p><p>Fixing this dysfunctional group of players is a monumental task. Initially, the Calgary Flames need to tackle the cap issues. The Huberdeau and Weeger contracts are significant problems that need to be addressed. The challenge is finding a way to fit both players within the team's budget. Ownership is not keen on a complete rebuild, so the Flames must figure out how to make hockey trades while staying within the salary cap. It is almost impossible to remain competitive while being restricted by the cap. Whether Brad or someone else is GM, they will have to have a top-notch capologist or possess magical powers to get the Flames out of this crap. </p><p>In the second part of this blog, I will delve into the Calgary Flames' most valuable trading assets. These include notables such as Tanav, Toffol, Hanifin, Dube, and Lindholm.</p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-69130383750102551992023-02-22T21:47:00.001-07:002023-02-22T21:47:22.085-07:00Sell, Sell, Sell<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5qGI_nj3yl0" width="320" youtube-src-id="5qGI_nj3yl0"></iframe></div><p><br /></p><p>I hate to state the obvious, but the Flames need to sell coming up to this draft. The Flames must take stock of their situation heading into this draft, as they have consistently failed to meet expectations. No matter the cause, they are not a playoff team and must take action. Selling off players is the only way to gain the assets they need to get back on track.</p><p>Which assets? I hate to say it, but don't they say ripping the bandaid quickly is better? So here is ripping the bandaid off. Elias Lindholm has one year remaining on his contract. While it may be difficult to do, the Calgary Flames have to decide whether to trade him to avoid a similar situation to what happened with Tkachuk or Gaudreau. Lindholm is an excellent playmaking center who can be a great asset for many teams, especially the Colorado Avalanche.</p><p>The Calgary Flames have many options on the defensive side. Who should they keep, and who should they trade? Mackenzie Weeger is rumored to be on the trading block. They are not actively shopping for Mackenzie Weegar but are open to offers for the blue liner. </p><p>Another option is Noah Hanifin, who has one more year after this season. Do the Flames keep him for another season or send him packing? If the Calgary Flames decide to part ways with Hanifin, he will be a hot commodity.</p><p>The Flames' UFA group is not exactly a bumper crop. However, they have three players—Lucic, Lewis, and Stone—who could bring in draft picks in a trade. The Flames may have to eat up half of his cap hit in any deal involving Lucic.</p><p>It would be a shame if the Flames opted not to keep Backlund or Tyfolli on, as their performances have been stellar this season. </p><p>Brad is in a tough spot, as his future with the Flames is not so bright with the Flames being out of the playoffs. He has nothing to lose at this point and may not be willing to start rebuilding for the future. </p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-41199560281965127302023-01-13T21:40:00.003-07:002023-01-13T21:40:32.135-07:00Blow it up<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheSIVGx5ctlMir8cqjdQaOkSQA1W6MAY-8_WM0Wla664MC7KOl6bVOSf64X5Qrf32cEfNizEhhn0QwAf72rEy_CxrLdindpYG_il-9qhHP1fz7tYkKsI37-VNlDzDI71BaRgVO4ASntV9L6rcG63gt9M5MZwqZYgyZkOuCUmCat17rdI7YzrO6cLtQ/s512/dumpster%20fire%20image-923405155263.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheSIVGx5ctlMir8cqjdQaOkSQA1W6MAY-8_WM0Wla664MC7KOl6bVOSf64X5Qrf32cEfNizEhhn0QwAf72rEy_CxrLdindpYG_il-9qhHP1fz7tYkKsI37-VNlDzDI71BaRgVO4ASntV9L6rcG63gt9M5MZwqZYgyZkOuCUmCat17rdI7YzrO6cLtQ/w400-h400/dumpster%20fire%20image-923405155263.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>I understand Flames fans being very frustrated with an underwhelming hockey team. I know this can't all be blamed on one player, but the apparent culprit is Markstrom. I hate to pick Marky, but he has been struggling all year.</p><p>That being said, the Flames have yet to tighten up on their defensive end. The forwards have been fighting the offensive side. They need to try harder to score and remember the other end. What is the saying? Oh yes, "defense wins cups."</p><p>Speaking of forwards, how about Milan Lucic playing his best hockey as a Flame? Lucic has really fit in with Huberdeau and Kadri. Huberdeau has been showing signs of getting out of the doghouse. But he still needs to pick it up if the Flames are to succeed.</p><p>Lindholm also needs to turn things around. He is the Flames' most talented centre, but perhaps losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau took its toll. Could anyone blame him? Losing two forwards like Tkachuk and Gaudreau will obviously change the stats. That being said, Lindy needs to pick it up.</p><p>The Flames repeatedly losing their lead has to stop. In the past, I could count on my hands how many times the Flames lost a game when they had a lead going into the third period. I can count that high this year on the many times they have blown leads. This year it is a regular occurrence. Each game, I am just waiting for the catastrophe to start.</p><p>The Flames are not a rookie team. It is time that they stop playing like one.</p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-56827518141027964132022-12-29T21:46:00.000-07:002022-12-29T21:46:05.301-07:00New Year, New Flames?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipu98Kk2nXYB-9NE4mABE94D5Iok-Vk6N7uOClYHhK9aePWKHKNa7ijkwo70XACsHFuMJ7xFEzh2p5GHra0ZsY29FG5o73NrP618OKtMeyhNGAqHSr424-ic2gpwVo5MpHUgYSyNPBhk0-hAJrCx4q5nS2t9EEr8UyRr1uJ69Mzto2NQfpcC30wOPh/s512/lump%20of%20coal%20image-1343098664441.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="512" data-original-width="512" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipu98Kk2nXYB-9NE4mABE94D5Iok-Vk6N7uOClYHhK9aePWKHKNa7ijkwo70XACsHFuMJ7xFEzh2p5GHra0ZsY29FG5o73NrP618OKtMeyhNGAqHSr424-ic2gpwVo5MpHUgYSyNPBhk0-hAJrCx4q5nS2t9EEr8UyRr1uJ69Mzto2NQfpcC30wOPh/w400-h400/lump%20of%20coal%20image-1343098664441.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I could go on for hours about what the Flames' needs are, but I wonder if bringing in a bunch of <span class="issue-underline underline text-gray-darkest font-body decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-primary-main hover:bg-primary-lightest" data-issueid="390b30d1-fdd4-489c-9251-270329db8bb9" data-testid="issue-underline:talented">new</span> players is the solution. The offense is average at best, and abysmal at worst. I could use other words, but this is a family blog, and my wife would not edit it for me. </p><p>Huberdeau has shown up a few times, then taken a seat to watch. The Breadman has yet to be the dough man (see what I did there). The defense has been lacking, to say the least. When your best defenceman has been Stone, it makes you wonder what is wrong. I mean good for Stone, bad for the Defence. Of course, that is not the case in every game, but it has happened this season.</p><p>To say the Flames have been inconsistent would be an understatement. It would be equivalent to calling the Grand Canyon a big hole. (Get that the Flames might have fallen off the path a few times.) </p><p>Markstrom coming out and saying he is not happy with his play is admirable. Of course, I have come to admit I suck at playing the piano. Saying it is one thing. Doing something about it is another. Yes, this blog is a little facetious, but you get my point. There is no room for excuses or mediocrity. The Flames have to stop the nonsense or they will have to listen to my big words of anger. If the Flames continue with sloppiness and inconsistency, there is always the lottery ticket of Beddard. Or we can put on our big boy pants and fix this ship.</p><p>Last Word</p><p>Darth Vladar, in thee we trust. So goes the beginning of the hockey season. Don't tell me you don't have them in your head. </p><p>There are high expectations for the Flames. As the season progresses, those expectations will turn into dread and visions of firing everyone. Well, maybe not. This team is built for the playoffs; we just have to get there. Speaking of expectations—I would like to throw out some numbers I think certain players should obtain. They are the leaders of the team going into this season. </p><p><br /></p><p>11 Jonathan Huberdeau </p><p>He is known as Huby and is the star of attraction this season. He is an outstanding playmaking forward who can play with the best of them. Huberdeau might be the best passer in the game. He has a sneaky shot. He will be the leading scorer on the team. </p><p>30-60-90</p><p><br /></p><p>Elias Lindholm </p><p>Elias Lindholm is the number one centre. He had a career year last year. He is a smooth skating forward who is sneaky fast. Lindholm has a terrific wrist shot. Lindholm's one-timers are deadly; he is very accurate in the slot. He will benefit from Huberdeau's playmaking. </p><p>I am expecting: 40-35-75</p><p><br /></p><p>52 Mackenzie Weegar</p><p>Many experts feel Mackenzie is the best defenceman on the team. He is strong both ways in his game. Sturdy and dependable defensively, he will cut down defensive mistakes in the Flames' zone. </p><p>Weegar is the typical Darryl Sutter player. He has a high hockey IQ. </p><p>I am expecting: 12-30-42</p><p><br /></p><p>Jacob Markstrom</p><p>Jacob is an elite goalie. Even better news, he won't be left to his own devices as often as last season. He is one of the best positional goalies with excellent vision. He rarely gets caught out of position. </p><p>His load should be less this season.</p><p>I am expecting: 55 starts, 35 wins, and 6 shootouts. I am really hoping it is 50 starts. </p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-24862696898085893712022-09-27T09:35:00.002-06:002022-09-27T09:35:35.640-06:00Darth Vladar should play<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiGbh4jksyNxZX3IidmSJVE7C_tymira-L3joFDIBKBp-5NQBo9V78wg3cNZpk0DcWvNfbOX1YlzMI1GO2BFrEeXYB7_jaC3e1eMsk1e5JQQwBOZGYM1XB6Hbe011scWpBuYoFSZFtdQCx58hWFWPVXmc9X6Yg2MqyV_AHdJeuKIwJAuj9TLtYoaIR/s1500/DALL%C2%B7E%202022-09-27%2009.32.33%20-%20darth%20vadar%20as%20an%20ice%20hockey%20goalie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="darth vladar hockey goalie generated by openai" border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1500" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiGbh4jksyNxZX3IidmSJVE7C_tymira-L3joFDIBKBp-5NQBo9V78wg3cNZpk0DcWvNfbOX1YlzMI1GO2BFrEeXYB7_jaC3e1eMsk1e5JQQwBOZGYM1XB6Hbe011scWpBuYoFSZFtdQCx58hWFWPVXmc9X6Yg2MqyV_AHdJeuKIwJAuj9TLtYoaIR/w400-h272/DALL%C2%B7E%202022-09-27%2009.32.33%20-%20darth%20vadar%20as%20an%20ice%20hockey%20goalie.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>Darth Vladar should play more this season. </p><p>Ring of Fire shows off Mr. Vladar's saves. We need to keep Markstrom fresher for the playoffs this year. Don't read more into my statement than that. I do not believe it was Markstrom's fault that we lost to the Oilers; that was a Total Team Collapse. Notice the capitalization. I wanted to emphasize that it was the team's responsibility. </p><p>If a team can limit a goalie start to 50 games, they will have a more refreshed goalie. A refreshed goalie means better quality saves. If Markstrom is on his game, he is one of the best goalies in the league. When alert, he is always in a position to make the save.</p><p>A tired goalie misses rebounds, often resulting in easy goals. He is often caught out of position. </p><p>The Flame's offense will tail off a bit this season. With the lost Tkachuk and Gaudreau, the Flames will need Markstrom to bail him out. No, I am not being a negative Nelly. Realistically, Kadri and Weeger will not make up for the loss of Tkachuk. </p><p>I love Markstrom. A rested Markstrom can be that much better. </p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-64630920077833050992022-08-24T21:27:00.004-06:002022-08-24T21:27:40.534-06:00Brad, you did what? Who would have thought Monahan, Tkachuk, and Gaudreau would be all gone? Like everyone else who heard the rumors, I refused to believe they would go away. Yes, sometimes I live my own little world.</p><p>We rebuild it. Stronger, faster... oh, never mind. Well, here we are now, Calgary Flames Management's own version of the Six Million Dollar Man. </p><p>The first question is whether or not Kadri is worth Monahan and a first. Monahan has not fit into the Sutter System from the start. Combine that with his injuries, and Mony has never gotten off the ground with the Flames. Despite all that, I think that he will excel with the Habs. The price of the first-round pick goes with the territory when asking a team to take all of his salary. </p><p>In signing Kadri, the Flames are getting a proven winner. Kadri brings a new attitude into the dressing room. He will put an intensity into the team that will no longer accept losing. The Flames have not acquired Kadri only for his offensive talent, but also for his attention to detail in his game. He brings tons of grit into his game. He gets into people's heads. I don't expect him to get ninety points, but I expect him to get 50-60 points and to be a shutdown player. A little more offensive than Backlund, with a touch of grouchiness, he is the perfect Sutter player. </p><p>Yes, I've heard what the naysayers have to say about the Kadri contract. At the end of his contract, Kadri will be as old as Methuselah. My answer is that Methuselah has two more possible cups to his resume. The Flames are in a win-now mode. They will take their chances with Kadi until he turns 39. Brad is a "put-up or shut-up" general manager. He is fighting for his job.</p><p>Randy</p><p><br /></p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-51444989306799140302022-08-04T19:49:00.004-06:002022-08-05T07:29:57.932-06:00Brad you did what?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkIzhFjeCCRu8_kM33RORv4GMJiBibmOpUcwmL7YrM9ltU7uYXvtjL4epawiEbw4mWzP9nzlHB_H-aGWgAChqIgFZbz-LCiN26tPzafZ8RoMijH2kOORMbOTRnkdIf9ZqLdWO46w9bAz1d_7O0qZDGxrCFC2sWwo1VXbruInZn57Y9A4jv-MGxPHzs/s1920/mayor-917149_1920.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1920" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkIzhFjeCCRu8_kM33RORv4GMJiBibmOpUcwmL7YrM9ltU7uYXvtjL4epawiEbw4mWzP9nzlHB_H-aGWgAChqIgFZbz-LCiN26tPzafZ8RoMijH2kOORMbOTRnkdIf9ZqLdWO46w9bAz1d_7O0qZDGxrCFC2sWwo1VXbruInZn57Y9A4jv-MGxPHzs/w400-h266/mayor-917149_1920.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>My wife almost had a heart attack on July 23 around ten pm. I might have gotten a little excited about a specific trade. I was told that Tkachuk was signed and delivered to the Blues. You can imagine my astonishment when the trade went down. </p><p>While everyone worries about the status of Huberdeau and Weegar, even if they don't sign, the Flames scored big time at the deadline. Don't worry; the Flames will not be left holding the bag; they will unload both players at the deadline if they don't have them inked to a contract extension. (Update: Huberdeau signs a $10.5 mm 8-year extension August 4.)</p><p>Now, what do we know about Cole Schwindt? We know he is excellent on the draw. He works hard in the corners and will not be cheated or outworked with the puck. He is also hard to take off the puck. </p><p>Schwindt has been improving his shot each year. He is becoming a more and more solid third-line centre. He can also play wing. Most people consider him a B+ prospect. Cole is tenacious when covering his assignments and will stick to opponents like glue.</p><p>The Flames signed Mangiapane and Kylington to avoid arbitration. This way, the Flames can move on with these two upcoming stars. I love it when teams can avoid the arbitration hearings, erasing the resentment of the players.</p><p>As for the contracts, I like them. Kylington is developing into an all-around defenceman. He might be a steal at this price if he doesn't get traded before the camp starts. </p><p>The Mangiapane signing was crucial. He will be motivated to prove his naysayers out of Calgary they're wrong. The Flames are thin on the forwards, and he could not lose the 35-goal scorer after the Gaudreau fiasco; Eat Bread brings a certain tang to his game, but he does not get the respect he deserves. </p><p>The Flames have 10 defencemen and one of the league's best defensive cores. The addition of Weegar puts Kylington or Hanifin as excellent trade bait to bringing in another top-six forward. Filling the void left by Tkachuk will be hard. No single player can replace Tkachuk, but they can find another 20-goal scorer to help fill the void. The offensive side of the game is going to be accomplished by committee. Everyone will have to pick up their game after the loss of Tkachuk.</p><p><br /></p><p>Randy</p><p><br /></p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-64230104504026688052022-07-02T20:15:00.005-06:002022-07-06T11:08:42.427-06:002022 Draft: Calgary Picks<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT3PXbSjvGp-0VwFUdwpLp-p6TeLQ0cGXNjDNK0-Is6zlbMrVvsid0DfUQgUoJvMP2AU31wr39fEKln9J9ntIWEsK-V7WCkBC0ElY02SOJ7dk6rR8p4op4Op7hN4Vy5CX34KUDh47BhlLTX3g-46SjejWlg1_BgymIqDW2JYkSPE7ZyEaJR7iFazXG/s1920/clock-334117_1920.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="1920" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT3PXbSjvGp-0VwFUdwpLp-p6TeLQ0cGXNjDNK0-Is6zlbMrVvsid0DfUQgUoJvMP2AU31wr39fEKln9J9ntIWEsK-V7WCkBC0ElY02SOJ7dk6rR8p4op4Op7hN4Vy5CX34KUDh47BhlLTX3g-46SjejWlg1_BgymIqDW2JYkSPE7ZyEaJR7iFazXG/w400-h400/clock-334117_1920.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="color: #0e101a;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="color: #0e101a;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="color: #0e101a;">Calgary doesn't have a first-round pick in this year's draft. The Flames will be exploring different ways to get into the first round. Could Monahan be shopped? Andrew Mangiapane? Then the dreaded question that I don't even want to ask — could the rights of Johnny Gaudreau be up for grabs? Flames have lots of options if they want that first-round pick. With the Flames' salary cap problems, they may very well seek different options to make room for Matthew Poitras, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk's contract under the salary cap. I am hearing they would love for Johnny to sign but aren't sitting back and will be aggressive in the free-agent market. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Going into this draft, the Flames need a second-line forward with some scoring skills. They really need some help with the secondary scoring. Quite often, if the top line did not score, the Flames laid an egg. They need a sparkplug, someone who can put some energy into the lineup. They should add another dman who is good in the defensive game. The Flames still are hanging their goalies out to dry. They need to be more defensive and responsive this season. A stay-home dman would be nice. Those are the two biggest concerns to be addressed this season. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">If things stay the same, the Flames will have a second-round pick, a fifth-round pick, and the seventh-rounders. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">My suggestions are:</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">59 Matthew Poitras </strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Centre </strong></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Poitras is a reliable two-way centre whose defensive play improves his offensive paralysis on the ice. David is a stay-home defenseman who will be a great penalty killer. He bails out other players' mistakes and does not panic with the puck. He has no fear. I decided to go the horse's mouth and ask expert Russ Cohen. As we get ready for the draft, the Scouts are earning their paycheques. Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Russ Cohen. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">All scouts look for different things. They all have a numeric system to apply to attributes like speed, as an example. They file the reports electronically after games. Some teams look for toughness, some are hard to play against. some speed, some playing the right way. Sometimes a scout can look at a player a few times and know his team has to get that player and then the rest of the visits is about confirmation before he recommends that player. Scouts' jobs depend on getting at least two players in every draft. Hopefully, they play 100-200 NHL games. You can't build a team through free agency in the cap world. Scouts are careful to use phrases like "generational talent". When the talent pool compresses as players move up that's when things either click or many times go sideways. Amateur scouting is vital to a team's future success.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">I'm Russ Cohen. I remember him jumping on the ice, often helping an injured player. That injured player did not have to be a Flame; I saw him jumping off for the other team player if he could get there before their trainer. That was just the man; he was all class. I will never forget his manner, always smiling. </p><p>Bearcat had a heart of gold. He was there for anyone who asked for help. He would have given the shirt off his back. He had his finger in many charities, offering his time to help in any way he could. He will permanently be attached to the Calgary Flames. The man, the myth, the legend, Bearcat Murray. </p><p>My sympathies to his friends and family. May God be with them at this time. </p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-29159457955451562482022-05-27T13:54:00.000-06:002022-05-27T13:54:11.470-06:00Flame out: What went wrong<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1l4V61yNfOAP1dlze0yPRAz4XiQ9BXoSrFAo1k5uR1Begi8SpQN8acFDH3y8ifhiW5kpWmIXkppCPWZrkZqjzU9vtYZfEghgL3xFDM9OPKoqgggEsJVghetbNST2DHATdYPbt0YINoHgD8V6hRrEAsM2pJZPe70DPR3dfSzhA1Tl8vJpXZiP_lO0_/s1920/the-end-919336_1920.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1920" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1l4V61yNfOAP1dlze0yPRAz4XiQ9BXoSrFAo1k5uR1Begi8SpQN8acFDH3y8ifhiW5kpWmIXkppCPWZrkZqjzU9vtYZfEghgL3xFDM9OPKoqgggEsJVghetbNST2DHATdYPbt0YINoHgD8V6hRrEAsM2pJZPe70DPR3dfSzhA1Tl8vJpXZiP_lO0_/w400-h300/the-end-919336_1920.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I could just copy other blogs of what went wrong and paste them here. Year after year, disappointment, and then the Flames make minor adjustments for the next season. After this year, I think small changes have come to an end.</p><p>The first choice was Tyler Toffoli's trade. Was it a complete failure? He was great during the regular season but went pretty quiet in the series lost to the Oilers. A rather expensive first-rounder, to say the least. He has one year left on his contract, so it might still be a little early to make a judgment on the deal. </p><p>The first line did not come through during the crunch. I know it is not fair, but often, the stars get the blame when the team fails expectations. The Flames need more players who can perform under pressure instead of panicking. This core has not come through, so changes have to occur. But who goes?</p><p>First on the block is Johnny Hockey. I know losing him would suck, but in reality, what has this core done since they've been together? Early exit after early exit. Then there is the demand for the ten million dollars plus cap it will cost to keep him. Do we pay out the money? I don't see the Flames doing that (but I don't have any inside info on that.) Johnny's tenure with the Flames will be known for not being able to come through during the playoffs. I am not sure he wants to stay in Calgary; I think he has made up his mind about testing free agency. My gut tells me that if he wanted to stay, he would have signed by now. Johnny is one of the best players in the NHL. No one can doubt his talent, and someone will pay what he wants. He is one of the best Flames players ever.</p><p>Tkachuk is going to cost the Flames $9.9 million to qualify him. Yes, he is coming off a career year, collecting over 100 points. He scored 40 goals this season, another career-high. I could recite all the stats backing up his worth until I grow blue in the face. Tkachuk brings a lot of character to the dressing room, he gets into the teams' heads, and he throws off other teams' superstars. What he does without the puck might be more valuable than what he does with the puck. But can he get 100 points without Gaudreau? And will he stay when Gaudreau leaves?</p><p>Is Darryl Sutter too loyal to his players? Is the system at fault? Is it time to bring a new philosophy to the Flames' thinking? </p><p>The Flames beating up along the boards has to change. It's a faster game now. Calgary's defence is too slow to compete with the faster teams in the league. It is time to get quicker and younger on the blueline, whether the Flames find the answers on the farm through the Heat or wheeling and dealing in the trade market. The number one guy I have been pushing is Connor Mackey I think he is ready to play now.</p><p>Randy</p><div><br /></div>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7356176701301750578.post-46241121273358270162022-03-22T21:30:00.001-06:002022-03-26T11:26:42.847-06:00Are They Good Enough<p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizRPrPTqQvxrIgsZjTuTA7qG8h_x1p8k6H912XCmoL0NwFUmt4NixJVLhitxrjcdtFIqoZMfspmgQXVIQdrelvJNGR1AjN8OVaEMsyP3YjHAUR9c3KiDga3lmagdxtKonXqdBCqBofv6MnCLEHiz8ithqtLR3LTC0SgV9ydDOcyFd0w6RRd2ZV2oKc/s1920/deadline-g255d80459_1920.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1772" data-original-width="1920" height="369" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizRPrPTqQvxrIgsZjTuTA7qG8h_x1p8k6H912XCmoL0NwFUmt4NixJVLhitxrjcdtFIqoZMfspmgQXVIQdrelvJNGR1AjN8OVaEMsyP3YjHAUR9c3KiDga3lmagdxtKonXqdBCqBofv6MnCLEHiz8ithqtLR3LTC0SgV9ydDOcyFd0w6RRd2ZV2oKc/w400-h369/deadline-g255d80459_1920.jpg" width="400" /></a></p><p>So, did the Flames do enough? </p><p>I know they are probably the best team in the Pacific Division. Apparently, they tried to get a depth defenceman, but couldn't make it work. The reason was there were not many options left by that point. I wonder if the Flames could have started earlier if they had made more cap room? They had to put Richardson on waivers just to be able to tinker in the final hour. </p><p>The Flames could have made a cap casualty trade. Now bear with me—they could have traded Monahan for a cheaper third-line centre. If they are going to use Monahan as a third-line centre, they might as well use an actual third-line player to do the same thing for cheaper. </p><p>One of my contacts has expressed how he feels about their use of Monahan: "They frankly misuse the talented centre." I know Flames fans are often frustrated with Monahan, but is it his fault? When a team undervalues a player, can he help but think less of himself? </p><p>The second part of this question: Should the Flames have considered making room for the Tkachuk and Gaudreau extensions next season? Could they have made a cap casualty trade without hurting the team? </p><p>One contact explained why they couldn't dump any cap: "When you have the chance at the cup, you have to go for it." I countered about having to lose Tkachuk or Gaudreau next year. Another contact agreed with not changing anything before the playoffs: "You can't mess with a team's chemistry when it is one of the best teams in the League." </p><p>With this discussion, I learned precisely what goes through a General Manager's mind at the deadline. They have to consider every option and then judge the likely result. Who knew?</p><p>Randy</p>The Fan Bloggerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04659829486836210606noreply@blogger.com0
